During the pottery unit in November. We composed many art skills such as creating your own as in making what you want and taking risks, when I made my angel i took a risk i thought it was going to break and not come out as well as it did, but it came out very well to my surprise. Clay is formed from erosion of rocks silicates. to us clay to make pottery you must need the following: a placemat, water/sponge, needle tool, and the clay itself. The clay workability depends in plasticity which is affected by the amount of moisture in the clay. There are certain stages in a potteries progress to being finished. It starts with wet lay with it being most workable and being able to be molded, leather hard is when it can't be molded anymore but you can attach with scoring and slip, and bone dry. Then it is fired in the kiln and it becomes bisque meaning it is no longer clay. Finally, your piece can be glazed and you are complete. However there are rules to pottery making. These rules are: 1) soft clay cannot be attached to hard clay 2) pieces of clay must be scored with a needle or brush and painted with slip to be "glued" together 3) clay must not be thicker than one inch and must be hollow for air to escape. 4) unnatural bends will result in cracks when drying. 5) uncovered clay is drying clay - so keep it covered! and finally 5) clay shrinks when it dries. Over all it sounds like a lot in the process but once you start doing it it's a lot of fun and is quite simple. I really enjoyed the pottery unit.
